A menace called Auto...

Kolkata is unable to breath. The great mass of people living here and commuting everyday for work are silently chocking to death. But see,in spite of taking such emergency actions neither the Govt.nor the common people are aware of this deadly situation.

The High court has long given it’s ordinance of not allowing the three wheelers spreading the poisonous gases anymore. But anybody is hardly paying any heed to all these repeated warnings issued forth both by the High court and the environmentalists.

This auto pollution has really become a menace for the common human being as well as for the autowallahas. In spite of a great number of awareness programs and protests from the environment researchers and scientists the “kata tel” run autos are actually ruling the roost.

“kata tel” as it is commonly called is actually a low quality and highly dangerous life wrecking fuel which comes extremely cheap,15 rupees per liter. Naturally it saves the auto drivers a huge cost compared to petrol and diesel prices. While all the major Indian metros are running their three wheelers on either CNG or LPG, the Kolkata autos are still running on this deadly fuel polluting the environment every bit and pushing the common peoples’ lives to extreme danger.

Environment pollution has taken over the city since long before and now daily breathing of this poisonous gas has increased the possibility of lung cancer by all means.Only the use of either CNG or LPG can curb this pollution and can offer the city dwellers some healthy air where they can at least breath free.

A number of measurements have been taken by the Govt.so far.But implementation of all these ideas have remained distant dreams. The High court has also turned lethargic in tackling this crucial issue with strong hands.Despite the Govt.’s dictate, the opposition from the anti govt.

Political parties has played an important role in not turning this important agenda into reality.the division between the auto operators and in spite of getting the Govt’s financial aid for converting their old autos for clean and green new autos, most of them have remained reluctant. Therefore only a few green autos are running on the city streets with a faint dream of all the autos becoming green too.

But this is high time that the authority along with the common people gear up to implement this life saving agenda with strict measurements. This would at least be able to offer to the coming generation a clean and green environment with some fresh air. This would even help the auto drivers lead a cancer free healthy life which is desired by all and sundry in this city right at this moment. Therefore, let us save not just Kolkata but the planet from the emission of all these deadly gases which are eating into our lives like the scariest nightmare.

Autos are a menace anywhere you go.... but plying at the cost of a deadly fuel and people’s life is certainly not right. I just fail to understand.. that when state governments like Delhi have taken steps to ensure that only CNG buses, taxis and autos will run on roads, then why can’t it be put across all India.
I am sure no action will be taken right now due to elections. Hope that the actions are taken soon.

Thanks for your views. You are absolutely right.I think all the state govts should take immediate actions to stop the environment pollution as it is a life saving question.Yes,as of now we can just hope for some effective solutions on part of the State Govt.Temporarily this crucial issue is on hold due to the upcoming elections. We can only hope for the best.

hi! Aditi, a nice story. If we compare the auto menace with Delhi then you will feel that the picture is bit different. In Kolkata autos usually ply between fixed destination (often between transport between metro stations) Where as in Delhi it is a ’survival of the fittest’ as invariably these auto drivers nod in the negative irrespective of distance and we Delhi-ites land up either in fight or walk on and wait for the buses which is hell. Apart from that you have over charging as seldom you will find autos running as per meter and mostly ornamental. In Kolkata at least you have the option of taxi which too was once the biggest ’menace’ especially ’lal shalu’ (red cloth) tied to meter during lunch time but today thanks to metro which has changed the picture and literary welcome passengers with open doors. I am confidant it would happen to Delhi too since metro is fast getting into Delhi culture.

Thanks for your comment and also for highlighting the ”auto menace” that you people are facing everyday in the state capital.Yeah actually every metro cities are facing different kind of problems with regular transport system which is so very crucial in our lives.Yes,taxis are definitely there in kolkata, but you would barely get one in times of need.Mismanagement has actually taken a firm root in all our systems and the issues which should be dealt with a war footing always take a backseat due to trivial political arguements. One other thing I would like to tell you in this regard. In this article I have actually tried to figure out the environment issue, the deadly pollution that the autos are doing on a daily basis. The poisonous gas emission must be immediately checked to let the citizens live in a healthy situation. And as you are aware of that it can only be done by converting these autos into the green ones. But anyway, you have also given me some valuable insights regarding the conveyance problem in Delhi. Thanks for it.
